Description
Today it is serene, quiet, peaceful. On June 6, 1944 it was anything but that. The Battle of Normandy lasted just June and August of that year. On June 6, 156,000 American, British and Canadian men landed on 5 beaches in the Normandy region. By the time it was over, France had been liberated from Germany.
This came at a heavy cost. On that day 2,000 Americans lost their lives on these beautiful beaches. It is estimated that more than 4,000 Allied troops also lost their lives here, on these stunningly beautiful beaches.
Today the wreckage still rests as a reminder of the sadness of that day. A reminder I suppose of places in history that we never want to return too. Yet humans repeat these scenarios over and over.
I look forward to a day when they will not learn war anymore and that these former memories will have passed away.
