Description
The great horned owl is one of the larger owls. They have a more robust body and tufted ears giving them the appearance of having horns. As expected with owls, the great horned owl is nocturnal. They are often seen near dusk sitting on fence posts or flying by with a heavy beat of their wings which can span as much as 4.5 feet.
Horned owls are fierce predators which are capable of taking down other raptors like some falcons, osprey and even other owls.
The eyes of a Great Horned Owl are notably large. Their eyes don't move, but their heads more than make up for that by swiveling 180 degrees, so they are capable of seeing in all directions, including behind them. The eyes of of this beautiful bird are what I find so striking and I have always been fascinated by their size and color. As a child I had a very large piece of art in my room of a Great Horned Owl.
