Description
Wood storks are massive white football shaped wading birds with mostly black heads and and black at the tips of their wings. They have a long woody looking bills, long black legs with red feet that look like shoes, standing about 3 feet tall as adults. Necks are covered in scales, each scale appearing to be attached by hand.
We spent month watching these Florida Wood Storks in South Florida starting with their courting, nest building, sitting on their eggs and raising their chicks. Trees are loaded with giant wood stork nests, maybe 15 feet above alligator infested waters. It's a very busy time for these fascinating birds. They work very hard and are excellent and loving parents to their little brood.
After things begin to settle and chicks are nearly ready to leave the nest, the wood stork parents begin to take some time to relax. This pretty little lady (Prefer to think it's a she) was far from her nest, relaxing in the early morning Florida air. She was just standing on the rail of the wooden boardwalk that meandered over the swamp waters.
